Is it just me or are the 2010 icons really non-descript? They all look grey to me. Is it possible to reinstate the old icons? I’ve tried the UI switcher but they all have the same monochromatic icons…

My install also defaulted to the dark-grey interface. You can switch it by loading another UI scheme. Choose “Customize” --> “Load Custom UI Scheme...” and load the normal default scheme from the “UI” directory in the 3ds Max root folder.

I’ve tried all those UI schemes and none of them have the old, more colourful, icons.

Yeah, they don’t appear to look exactly the same as the previous releases, but they are still a lot better looking than the grey icons.
Edit: What is the name of the UI scheme that you like the most?

Ok,my reseller informs me that the icons are non-changeable as a result of autodesk wanting to unify their programs.
Whilst I can understand the icons changing to unify applications, what I don’t understand is the software going back a good decade or two and PREVENTING the user from customising the UI to suit their preferences. I find the new Render Dialog and Material Icons and all the icons in that area of the main toolbar far too grey… I liked the splash of colour that allowed me to quickly see which button to press without having to concsiously see what was on the button. Perhaps I need to pass a special aDesk optical test before I have the correct system specifications to use 3dsMax ;)

Can you clarify what your reseller meant? You CAN change the icons and all the toolbars and menus are just as customizable as they’ve always been…

I am a heavy user of Civil 3D and I noticed in the 2009 version the icons have lost most of their color. Now the dark theme does the same in Max Design 2010. I don’t quite understand why dark UI themes have to have no color for icons. Who at Autodesk is coming up with this?

To add color to the icons just use the Customize user interface menu. Go to Colors > Icons:Enabled, and use the controls there to customize the color of the icons. Values of Saturation:100, Value: 100, Transparency: 100, Contrast: 0, and Gradient Map:0 should do the trick, but you can use any combination you like. Also you will see some white fringing, as the icons were pre-mutliplied to match the light UI.

I don’t have 2010...... but in 2009 and previous For full colour icons with the dark scheme.....you load the ame-dark.ui scheme, save as MaxStartUI.ui with “Classic Icon” checked. Then reload the MaxStartUI.ui....(you will see the 3d icons but in grayscale) Go to Customise UI / Colors / Icons Enabled , change the Saturation, Value and Transparency to 100 and uncheck “Invert”.
I hope it’s the same in 2010. anyone care to try it out ?
