How can I show a cut away view of a model? and how would i keyframe it if there is more to it.
Thanks

You could try a Slice Modifier with a Cap Holes modifier on top. You will, however, have problems with material IDs unless the model is fairly simple.
Max 4.2 through 2013.
XP-64 (SP2)
NVidia 9800GTX-512 (Driver 266.58).
Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz, 8Gb Ram, DX9.0c.

You can also use the camera clipping plane to “cut” a view, but the cut will always be exactly facing the camera.

thanks for advice i see nice animations with buildings peeling away showing structure and so forth. the camera idea sounds like a nice quick solution. using slice i will look into too.
any other tips appreciated, the need for cutaway views and animations seems too come up allot for mechanical parts and architecture.. there must be allot of tricks to do it.

cool product. I wish they had demo, really might be worth it.
I like like the slice option but the cap holes modifier is not working well. Is there a trick to getting the cap holes to work right, i cannot seem to select a specific area for capping?

The area to be capped is caused by the Slice creating “holes” in the mesh. You can’t “select” them because they’re created automatically and will be slightly different on every frame. The “cap” will have a Material ID, but if the slice cuts through more than one section of the model (think a horizontal slice through a capital U) the IDs may not be what you expect. That’s why I added the warning to my earlier post.

If the object is just a box, or other simple geometry with clean edge loops the slice and cap works fine. If you really want it to be nice, you need to model it. We use techniques like Path Deform and or actually animate the sub-object of the editable poly.

How do you use the camera clipping plane to “cut” a view, is this just setting up a new camera and then going to an option??
Also, when you slice through object, what if they are all on individual layers? Also if you cap the ends, will these always be capped or only when that slice is applied? Finally, can you use the slice multiple times on one object, so your say slicing a section from two ways, then set this up so you can choose when you want to see the section?

How do you use the camera clipping plane to “cut” a view..?
Just enable “Clip Manually” in the camera’s Clipping Planes rollout. You may need to Render 2-sided (scanline), or enable 2-sided (Standard material) or uncheck Backface Cull (MR A&D) in the material because you will be seeing a lot of backfaces.
