My normal display setting is smooth+highlights. Is there a way to have it add faced edges to the selected geometry when I select something?

To the selection only? I don’t think so (but I could, of course, be wrong). F4 should toggle Edged Faces, but it affects all the objects, not just the selected one(s).

Yeah F4 is that I normally use. However, I am attaching geometry on the fly (without using the pick list) and it would help if it changed color or some sort of display change to verify that I am attaching the correct objects as I go. The are is just so densly populated that sometimes it difficult to verify correct selection by bounding box only.

In the viewport configuration, there is a check box for “Display Selected With Edged Faces”.

If i understand correctly you want some sort of highlighting of the currently selected object (not subobject) ? Thats perfectly doable, besides mapping a shortcut to “Show Selection Brackets Tooggle” in the customize UI panel, there’s also a “Display Selected with Edged Faces” toggle available there, if you want a more prominent display of your current object selection....
