- create a DirectX shader material
- set it to use ...\maps\fx\StandardFX.fx
- change some settings in the shader, colors, diffuse map, etc…
- copy that material to another slot in the ME.

when it’s copied, all the settings you had changed will be wiped and set back to default.  Happens if you right-click copy, drag and drop, copy inside a Multi-Sub, etc.  Instancing will maintain the settings…

2009 remembered the settings.  Anyone know if this is a bug or intended?  I’m a little surprised that this hasn’t been mentioned before in the forums so maybe this is isolated to us, altho it is happening company wide.

Hi, I have the same problem (3dsMax 2010 SP1).

Moreover, some settings that have been correctly set are not kept when I reload the scene.
Those settings are the “Light Position” value of the DirectX shader I designed with ShaderFx.

To my opinion, this is a very critical bug :S

Here is the behavior I get when I re-open a scene with my shaders (cf image).
I can also provide a scene and a shader for the Autodesk developpers to reproduce the bug, if required.

Hope that could be fixed asap…

I`ve also noticed this and it’s a major bug which needs fixing.

I thought it would of been fixed in the first service pack…

Things can only get fixed if they know about them.

Best way to make sure they know is the Defect report submission form - don’t assume they read every thread on here looking for possible problems.

Max 4.2 through 2013.
XP-64 (SP2)
NVidia 9800GTX-512 (Driver 266.58).
Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz, 8Gb Ram, DX9.0c.

Bug reported.

Does this also occur in Max 2009? It doesn’t in Max 2008. This bug alone is enough to prevent our studio from upgrading, as we rely on FX shaders in our production pipeline.

This is probably known by now, but just in case…

These bugs have been fixed by the latest 2010 Hotfix 2009.09.22.

When a Max file is loaded, the light dropdowns are reset to Default Light and the lighting uses the first light in the scene, but all the rest of the settings seem to be retained properly. Drag-n-drop doesn’t reset the lights at all.
