I am a very new user…
I created a 2D editable spline, and the outline in all viewports is a pale grey, even though the colour I have assigned to it it bright red.
If I convert to poly and extrude it appears translucent, but still grey. Materials have no affect in the viewport either, although it behaves and renders as it should.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Pete.

Maybe you (accidentally) made it see-through? With it selected, press Alt+X, or Right-Click it | Object Properties | See-Through.
