Guys, i really don’t like to be the guy who’s going to criticize the tools… but boy oh boy does max 2010 sux ballz! it is probably the most unstable release i’ve had to work with for a long time. And if i bother coming here tonight to post this out, it really is because i’ve had it with the bugs, the permanent crashes, the weird stuff… like just now, i’ve dared to do a Ctrl+Z and max sent me once more half an hour in the past by executing a never ending series of Undos… when i was just hoping for a single 1… but i guess i got lucky this time as it at least did not crash in my face as i was kinda expecting it to do when I push it far beyond the limit of the reasonable by trying to undo my last action!? Seriously, i’ve installed all the hot fixes and service packs. Someone, please do something about this ridiculous buggy release, i don’t count anymore all the issues we’ve had in production with 2010, it’s depressing.

Sorry about the “whining”, frustration got to me last night, i could have spared the forum of the sarcasm. But the message stays the same, something is seriously wrong with the 2010 release and still with Max in general. Sure i don’t ask that much to my car, beside driving fwd/bwd/turn/stop… but if it was built the same way max is… I’d be dead already, killed by an “unexpected exception that occurred on my network” or by a lethal undo. So, i would greatly appreciate if ADSK would add up “safety and reliability” to the list of requirements of the next release… maybe less fancy useless interface changes (i mean… what the hell is that “ribbon” thing??!! ...and why does the graphite mod tool looks like it doe snot belong to Max?? ...how about harmony and consistency… anyways...). Less fancy, more consistent… please.
pe@ce,
Adriano
PS: ...and thank you very much for this very very comforting and constructive comment, Jeff… much appreciated.

i understand that all these are extremely frustrating and sincere, but i guess i must be the luckiest guy around (? honestly i am not!)
i have not seen any of 90% of the issues i see in here and i am not bothered by the (imo as a user of 3dstudio since the days of DOS) very much welcome additions and changes in the interface. I love working with the stupid ribbon in expert mode!!!!
In fact, I wish there was a way to replace the entire command panel with the ribbon once and for all!!!
maybe because i am really used to using ribbon from office all the time and i find it very comfortable?? could it be that i am not doing the same as you guys do with max? (i swear to newborn Christ i pretty much do!) modeling and texturing and rigging, articles, rendering with standard and mental ray…
I am not saying it is perfect, there are lots of omissions and great room for improvement but seriously… i.e. i do not like much how the new undo list works. but it’s ok because i wasn’t using it much.
the reason why we do not see all the good things and how stable this is (apart from some issues that have to do with dependencies, drivers, .NET, etc.) and the reason how deserted these forums feel compared to the old days is because people do not come here to say how good time they have with it?
I do though and although i went through the initial frustration with hangs, lost ribbons, invisible file menu items, because i had wrong drivers, wrong .NET distribution, certain ermissions in my system, etc. it worked fine after one week of systematically figuring out what is going wrong with my machine’s set up and not max and ever since my everyday working life has improved at least a little bit by having such cool features as being able to unwrap multiple objects with one modifier for instance that previously was not possible in max… paint my rough colours and guides straight in max… and so on and so forth.
a friend of mine was complaining some month ago too, that he had some issues with the interface and such, i asked him if he had taken care of the dependencies he said yes (what max comes with is not necessarily what would make it work properly in some cases)but after going over it again and installed .net and the other MS whatever thingie fresh and after that everything started working smoothly.
I am sure you guys have tried it all but install the latest dependencies from the internet without antivirus and such on. Do you have service pack 3 installed with your xp btw? Check all these things out if you haven’t. Partial SP3 installations do not necessarily work. It might take you a couple of days to figure it out. But what is a couple of days thorough check for peace of mind?

Thanks Yannisk for your considerate and constructive comment. Indeed you’re right, and i forget to mention here that there is a lot i am amazed with while working with Max. And you’re absolutely right about dependencies, it suddenly occurred to me that i am working with loads of plug ins and add ons, some installations of those might have Haltered the .net and drivers, i am going to double check that the latest is installed (hopefully the latest would be the the appropriate one to run a smooth Max). I don’t really have a choice here, i really need to make this whole pipeline stable, it has become impossible to work “in fear” of any unexpected errors and crashes. Hard to take the step in the middle of a production though, i shall wait an other few days to troubleshoot. Thanks again for your comment.

Im thinking of going back to 3d studio max 4.

I’m still using Max 2009 because of the crashes in 2010. Most of my issues come from PolyBoost.
I love PolyBoost in 2009 but it is not stable at all in 2010 ( Graphite Tools)
Wish Auto Desk would get the bug out of their butts about having all programs look the same.
My dad always said if everyone in the world liked Blue, it would be a Blue world. I don’t care what other programs look like. I own Maya 6.5 unlimited and am glad I did not keep up with the subscription as I am sure Auto desk will wreck that program as well.
Like mentioned above there are a lot of cool features in Max. I just want it to look the same as I have gotten used to. Thinking seriously about dropping my subscription if Max 2011 is not fixed.
What is the point of keeping up with a software that does not get fixed?

Not sure if anyone cares or reads this, or if they do, that they have any kind of influence in decision making in Max development, but I too wish that Max gets a core re-write. Drop .net, iCrap and everything else that makes no sense whatsoever in Max.
Add multi-core support in areas other than rendering while at it. Dont add a single new thing. I dont mind. I do mind Max crashing madly and/or working unpredictably.
Marketing guys can call it “the best 3d software release ever”, and if they do what I said, they wouldn’t be lying.

ALso i did not mention this, but today i’ve just had enough of the frame buffer of Max 2010! What the hell is going on with the Frame buffer… everytime it’s open, my cursor blincks and the whole interface becomes slow and flickery?? Am i dreaming it, or is it just messed up for you guys?

My machine crashed several times yesterday - just doing a Ctrl-Z once...this goes on day after day. There are other bugs I can’t resolve that popped-up with 2010.
