Help!  Does anyone have a good - reliable way of getting Alias .wire files into max?
Typically the .wire files contain disjointed surfaces (poor surface continuity) and therefore do not translate using any of the conventional solid model formats.  (I’m guessing the new subscription bonus thingy is therefore not going to help me.)

I have unsuccessfully tried .obj (errors part way through the import complaining about “Invalid vertex index"), IGES - but that takes weeks to import a 35Mb .wire file. (OK - perhaps not weeks but I have waited 15 hours before giving up).  I have also tried DWG, but there’s no controls on the output from Alias other than AutoCAD drawing file version…

Getting desperate!  Should it be this hard to go from one Autodesk product to another?

you can save to STP from alias and use a translator like Okino to import them into MAX, or you maybe able to export as .3ds. I am not an expert in NURBS, but I think you have to use a function such as shell or stitch to sew your different NURB surfaces to gether before you bring them to a polygone based software, and IGES takes forever to come into MAX.

OK - 2 years on from my original post, I’m going to have to ask the same question, but word it slightly differently.

Given that Alias Design 2012 and 3ds max Design 2012 are now shipped as part of the same suite of tools (Autodesk Product Design Suite - Ultimate) what is the suggested “best practice” for getting Alais .wire files into 3ds max?

3ds max does now support .wire files - but there are no controls over incoming surface geometry.

Is it too big a leap to offer the Showcase style geometry importer in max?  This not only gives good control, it also allows the data to remain linked giving you the best possible workflow.

Here’s hoping!!

Hey Peter,

I am curious what the issues are.  Max does now support Wire Files to be imported as Body Objects (NURBS).  Is it that you import surfaces that don’t get trimmed/sewn or a problem with materials not coming in correctly?  I think they are going for the Showcase experience in Max but then again, Showcase is more of a viewer.  I think if you mentioned specifically what your issues are, Autodesk might have a better idea if how to improve the current workflow.

I do know that there is a lot a user can do differently in Alias to get better or worse results coming in to Max. Anyways I’d like to hear about your issues.

Erik
