Firstly, Max version? I assume it’s 2010 as this is a 2010 forum, but is it the standard (entertainment) version or the Design version?

For which version of Max was your copy of The Bible written? (I don’t own it so I can’t look).

Do you have the tutorials which come with Max? If so you should probably do those before starting on any books. If not, they are available for download from the main Autodesk site.

If you buy/download a model and everything is black, it often is because the materials are incompatible with your installed renderers--for instance the model has Vray materials but you don’t have Vray installed.  However you should get various warnings if this is so.
