When I merge two files, the file that has been merged loses its textures in the Material Editor. When I merged these two files into a third, the only textures in the Material Editor are those in the third file. Is this the way Max works or am I doing something wrong? Is there a way to get the textures into the parent file (the one that’s merged to)?
Thanks

It’s how it works. The material _editor_ slots are basically just a temporary creation area for you to build and apply materials, so the fact a material in the scene isn’t in an editor slot has no effect on rendering - it’s still in the scene.
If you import something and want its material back in an editor slot, pick an empty one and use the eyedropper tool to collect it from the object in the scene.
Remember you can use the new Material Explorer window in Max 2010 to navigate through the full list of materials, irrespective of what’s loaded into the editor.

If the MATERIALS are there in the scene but the TEXTURES are not—that is a known bug. The paths for textures do not properly carry in via a merge. Use the Utility:Bitmap Manager to find “missing” textures and update the paths.
According to a similar message in the “Materials” forum, make sure you have the latest Service Pack installed—it was supposedly fixed.
