There are no missing files, it’s just a small configuration to do. View cube and Steering wheel are missing because DirectX 10 is set to be the Direct 3D version. That can be fixed by:

1) customize --> preferences --> viewports --> choose driver --> and change the Direct3D version to DirectX 9 --> ok --> ok :). Then relaunch the 3d Max.

2) After that, u have to configure the viewcube and steeringwheels to what they should be: Views --> Viewport Configuration --> View cube --> Check “show the Compass below the Viewcube and change the opacity to 100%. Then go to “SteeringWheel” tap --> change the size and opacity of the big and mini wheels as in the attached pics, and in the orbit tool, check “keep the scene Upright --> ok.

No, sorry but that’s not it. I’m having the exact same issue (which never used to occur; I reinstalled it after it having been uninstalled for a while and this happens). I tried your suggestion, but it does not apply as the DX 10.0, debug and software options on the direct 3D driver setup are unavailable, so i already have all the right ones selected. I’ve tried remaking the 3dsmax.ini file, reinstalling (in 32 and 64bit), reinstalling having removed all files from all autodesk directories etc, and nothing seems to help. I also can only use 3ds Max in OpenGL, as direct 3d does not work; the viewports just stay white and don’t display anything, and the only other available option is openGL, i can’t use software… help, anyone?!
