Hi folks
I dont know what is happening to my 3dsMax, but in the past 2 weeks i´m getting this terrible error on my imported objs.
From simple spheres to base meshes, every obj i try to load kind of deform all my mesh.
Is there anything i can do?

I really need help with this, i´ve tried to reinstall the program, installed service packs, hotfix, but nothing works : :(

HELP!

Mesh distortions often happen when the object is either too small or too big, or too far away from the scene center/origin. Could you provide what your System and Scene Units settings, object dimension, and what its coordinates are?

You can look up System and Scene Units settings via Customize → Units Setup.
Object size can be accessed via right-click, Object Properties.
Position readout can be accessed from Move/Transform Type-In dialog box.

Thx Anna!! but i dont think this is the problem =/
See, I always use this basemesh on my models and it works pretty fine.
This error happens with ALL objs i try to load, no matter what.

Can you attach one of those .obj files (zipped!) so we can try importing it please. Need to determine if it’s the files which are at fault or your system.

If you have any problems attaching the file, see this post.

i get this error on Every obj i try to load =/
Even if i create a simple sphere and export it, then import again, i get this same error.
It´s some obj loading problem.

here is a base for who want to test.
i´m pretty sure it will open corecctly with anyone
but not with me ;(

This is what I get. I applied Edit Poly on top to view the model properly.

It seems to import ok, but it’s very odd - I can’t see the mesh in it’s proper wireframe colour even if I remove any material. Very odd.

Anyway.

Start Max
Set System Units (not just Display Units) to Inches
Import the model, I turned off the Material import, but touched nothing else (my system defaults to the “Blender” preset).
Remove any material (I know there shouldn’t be any, but...) by entering “$.material=undefined” in the Listener.
Polygon level, select all, detach to object.
Delete the imported object, the “duplicate” seems fine to me.

Max 4.2 through 2013.
XP-64 (SP2)
NVidia 9800GTX-512 (Driver 266.58).
Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz, 8Gb Ram, DX9.0c.

Hi Steve,

I applied Edit Poly modifier after importing. That solved the weirdness in object display. It was flat-shaded black when I imported the head. I’ve seen this before, but I have no idea what causes this.

I tried that - didn’t work for me. Tried converting to EP too - still didn’t work.

I’ve seen it before as well, in scenes posted here, never did work out what the problem was though.

Really? Hmm, I guess this is one of those inexplicable weirdness that crops up once in a while. :/

I just opened the head as well in Max and it opened just fine.  Have you installed all the updates and hot fixes?

The title of your thread seems to have been changed to “Solved”. Could you tell us how you solved the problem so others who face similar problems can learn from it? Thanks.

Idd.

Not much use to anyone else if we don’t know what the solution was. Mind you, no-one else could see the specific problem you were seeing.
