Hi there.
I’m a fairly new animator trying to open a 3ds Max scene that was inherited by another studio.
I’ve tried to open the scene numerous times as well as tried to merge the scene into a new max file.. but to no avail.. And I am wondering if it’s because the scene uses iray and I don’t have it?
When I first try to open it, it tells me that there are 3 missing mental ray dll’s.
mentalray.dlz Class: mental ray material override options SuperClass: 0x200
mentalray.dlz Class: mental ray iray Plugin Options SuperClass: 0x200
mentalray.dlz Class: mental ray iray Renderer SuperClass: 0xF00
Then when I click open it just gives a “File Open Failed” error.
When i try to merge the file… nothing happens. Doesn’t even give me the merge window after selecting the file to merge from.
Could this be because of the scene previously using the iray renderer?.. If not are there any other suggestions?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Most likely cause will be that the scene was created in Max 2011 or 2012. Max has never been able to open scenes created in newer versions.
However, the later versions CAN “save as” a 2010 scene (and in the case of 2012, as a 2011 scene) so there is the option of opening the scenes in the later version and saving back to 2010. Or you could just upgrade…
Max 4.2 through 2013.
XP-64 (SP2)
NVidia 9800GTX-512 (Driver 266.58).
Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz, 8Gb Ram, DX9.0c.

yes its because you don’t have iray you can’t get it for 2010 you may need to do what steve said and upgrade or you can download a trial of max 2012 and open it in there and try to save it down

Yep! That did the trick. I didn’t have to switch over to MR either. Simply Saved the scene as a 2010 max file and re-opened.
Thanks for the help. It’s very appreciated.
