Keywords:
materials, importing, MAXScript, sceneMaterials
Problem:
When importing a scene into 3ds Max 2010 (FBX, OBJ, 3DS, etc) after Reset, the MAXScript global variable ‘sceneMaterials’ does not contain the list of actual scene materials. After importing a scene, the materials are listed in the Material Editor/Get Material/Browse From:/scene area, but a query of the sceneMaterials variable shows that it is empty despite having the materials listed in the Material Editor as scene materials.
Detailed Report (including a temporary work-around):

Hello everybody,
I suggest, the “render-to-texture"-feature has a bug since the Max 2009 version (it’s still in there in the 2010 version).
When you render to texture a sphere in projection mode the projected objects are also projected to the backside of the sphere, overlapping the frontside projection. In previous versions (earlier than V. 2009) this definetely did not occur.
To test it, you can either follow the link (http://www.loxogon.de/hll5656.html) and download the Max scene. Or you try out the step-by-step-explanation:
01. Create a sphere.
02. Place textsplines around it and name them front, back, left and right according to their position to the sphere.
03. Set up render-to-texture for the sphere. Activate the “Projection"-Mode and pick the four textsplines to be projected onto the sphere (set up the sphere’s projection cage either).
04. Click render.
You will see that the opposite direction names (like front and back) are projected at the same place (overlapping each other or being placed underneath). This is because in this (and the previous) version Max projects two directions: frontside of the surface to the end of the cage and the oppisite one: the backside of the surface towards infinity.
This is the link to the diskussion thread:

Kind regards
Arnim

Application Menu becomes unclickable. XP Pro 64bit with FinalRender installed. No time, energy or will to figure out the steps to reproduce it. It happens. Autodesk, that’s your job - please fix it.

File name problem when using Batch Render with Backburner.
Discussion is here.
Synopsis: When Single is chosen in Render setup, and a job is added to Batch Render, the saved image file name will not be appended with the frame number, even if the job is set to render a range.

There appears to be a bug with global illumination when using a file that was created in an earlier version of 3ds Max, resulting in excessively large values in the blue channel (and only the blue channel) of a rendering, up to a million times what they should be.
Description and discussion here:
http://area.autodesk.com/for...ation-with-mental-ray-gi/
It’s still unclear what exactly causes the bug and unfortunately I don’t have time to investigate it further.

http://area.autodesk.com/for...n-2010/composite-map-bug/
As you can see, there is no problem with max2009 mentalray.
but when I use the same map in max2010 mentalray, there are strange result.

Bug with DirectX materials losing their settings
When a directX material is copied from one slot of the material editor to another, all the settings are lost.
Beside when the shader has some light properties (light position), the name of the lights used in those properties are lost and set to Default Light when the scene is saved and re-opened.
All those features where working well with 3dsMax 9 and 2009.
