Just ran into this problem again with 3dsmax 2009.
The last time it happened the fix above worked for me. (regsrv32)
But today it didn’t, when I hit enter, I got another error.

So I downloaded and installed the latest hotfix and that has seemed to
fix the issue.

I would like to give a big thank you to Eicronie for sharing on how to fix this scary issue. You are my hero.
I got this issue by removing old versions of Max on my system.
