Since Max2009 Autodesk has the Default Light Create Mode set to Photometric Lights. For all of you who don’t like that setting here is a small script which goes into your scripts/startup folder and changes that

with redraw Off(
startObjectCreation OmniLight
startObjectCreation Plane
Max modify mode
Max create mode
)

By the way, maybe its just me, but if you you are having problems to get this script running even so you copied it into the startup folder than do it like me and copy it into this folder:

YourDrive:\Users\YourName%\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMax\2011 64bit\enu\scripts\startup

Another thing to mention about this: If you reset max than its back to photometric :(
Wish there was a setting for this.

I should have posted it here instead. Take a look at the screen attached.

You can find the theme of the screenshot here.

I just posted my Maintoolbar icons to my blog if anyone wants to revert their maintoolbar back to the classic icons.  I also posted a menu file there too.

I should, I suppose, at this point remind everyone about the EULA - especially the bits about not redistributing files.

.ini files (which many of the maxstart UI files are) are one thing - they serve no useful purpose to anyone without Max.

Icon files, on the other hand are supplied on disk (or in the subs download) by Autodesk, they are undoubtedly copyrighted and could well be used by anyone (anyone wishing to argue with AD’s legal department anyway).

Bearing in mind that we all agreed to the terms of the EULA by installing and using Max, it may be that reconsidering whether posting such files publically is a wise move (or not...).

Max 4.2 through 2014, Composite 2014.

CurrentDefauts.ini >modified after instaling vray

fixed/modified:
-snap is now working
-gamma enabled
-primitive spline set to corner
-old scene explorer
-vray shadows as default

just COPY file in this folder(win7): C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Autodesk\3dsMaxDesign\2011 - 64bit\enu\defaults\MAX.vray

ps. it would be good if moderator could clean this thread from time to time!

It would be even better if folks read the first post and didn’t post questions in the first place. They don’t, of course. Please note that the Moderators are not Autodesk employees, are not paid, and are not obliged to do anything other than enforce the forum rules.

Presumably you intended to attach a file? See this post for help with attachments.

Steve,

There is no way for me (post originator) to clean up the post...is there?

Is there no “Edit” button - same line as “Quote” and “Reply to this comment”?

I can edit your original post for you if you can’t.

Sorry Steve, I wasn’t clear. I would like to delete unneeded posts in this thread to only keep relevant information to “tweaking Max”

Ahh I see. No, you can’t do that. I could, but I’m wary of deleting old posts, especially where they have replies (as some of them do). Then there are questions and answers embedded in comments (sort of valid ones) to an off topic post. Deleting the post will delete all the associated comments.
On balance I think it would be better to leave them as-is. Any new ones I’ll try and jump on.

some tweaks to optimize top bar of max2011:

- you may put your own tools in QuickAccess - just need to create scripts in UI/usermacros with icon defined
- press HideMenuBar to get rid of big left-top corner button
- kill InfoCenter - put this in Scripts/Startup

manager dotnetclass "Autodesk.Windows.ComponentManager"
manager.InfoCenterToolBar.height 0.0d0

PS here i have question - how to script HideMenuBar to start automatically with max

Is it possible to make the “Save as...2010” option the default save value?  I have Max 2011, but school still uses 2010 so I have to constantly remember to Save As and change to 2010. Even just one Ctrl+S reverts it back to version 2011.
