Sounds like it could actually be a hardware fault. Something might be fried on the card that only shows up when you have an app like Max loaded. Does it still play any games or any other programs that use DirectX or OpenGL? A few suggestions:
First, one thing to do is actually shut down and remove the card, give it some Dust Off etc and the same with the slot. Re-seat it and make sure it’s firmly in place.
Second, is this a card that was factory over-clocked? Could be trouble there.
Third totally remove the driver. Restart in VGA mode and actually delete any folders left over, and maybe even scrub the Registry for anything Nvidia. Then reload the driver, but choose Custom install and ONLY load in the necessary driver with nothing else, at least for now.
Hope one of those ideas help! If after all this it doesn’t work, I’d say it’s time to think about getting a replacement card.

I have looked everywhere for the solution to my problem!
I am going NUTS!
and I am currently able to run in my computer… LUMION2, CRYENGINE3 , AUTOCAD 2010, ETC
just 3DSmax wont work!
I got to read some post from people whom went back into older drivers for the nvidia gforce 550 ti graphic card
I did it but its not working for me!
I tried with 275.33 and 285.62
I rememeber that when 3dsmax crashed my screen went PINK! and it got all freezed! I had to reset the computer. I did a research on this pink screen issue but everything goes back to the graphic card! I have looked everywhere I also opened a treat at the nvidia forum http://forums.nvidia.com/index.p...c4a88892&showtopic=228511
can you please
help me out!
the graphic card was factory over-clocked
I cant open my computer cuz I will lose waranty!!!
THANK YOU I really need to get back to work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HELP
I have added a screen shot from 3dsmax error log
maybe install 64 bit version of max if u have 64 bit windows? best to use 64 bit all the way...32 bit is dead.
may not solve your prob...but just a suggestion. if u bought this at a store, take the pc there and have them replace the card right away while u wait and test.
:( no need for that… :) you’ll be happier once you do it… get rid of that “Ti” card… I am sure users with that card will disagree.... but get yourself something more mainstream what most users are using without problems. Don;t get AMD/ATI either...you’ll miss out with iRay etc. at least get a GTX 560 or higher with 1GB and higher...the more ram u can afford the better. also the higher bit.
the higher the rating the better… just go down until you find one with a good price u can afford.
these aren’t necessarily the BEST ratings for 3ds max...probably games and the such...but gives u a good idea of 3d power vs taking a wild guess.
would be nice to see something like this but with 3d apps as the test benchmark...comparing geforce, quadros, ati/amds etc.
the GTX 560 (NON-Ti!!!!) is probably your best bang for the buck if your price is low like the 550ti crap. I think getting a GTX 580 or so is rediculous since the 600 series just came out and are about the same price and are SUPPOSED to be blazing better...but have to wait and see..as i think users are having probs with them and max.
unfortunaly where I live I cant have acces to the 600 series
they havent got here yet!
and I need to get back to work now!
thanks for your help!
by the way, I did uninstall the drivers
I thought I was gonna be able to open max
with the default vga drivers but I still get the same error!
I am guessing I am gonna get the new graphic card
install the drivers and everything and it wont work anyways!!
dude in that thread had ZOTAC’s (GTX560 though) not sure if his were “Ti” or what? but ZOTAC, Ti, Pink/Purple Screen...hmm...all would throw a flag up for me if I didnl;t want the problem again… maybe check out a differnt manufactuer besides ZOTAC just to make sure? EVGA maybe? maybe a hardware glitch in the ZOTAC causing the pink screen? dang… i think a GTX 580 is only $100 (US) cheaper than a GTX 680 that are new here in US...hard to get them here also… so if u need now, forget it… i think for about $160 to $180 u can get a GTX560 here in US. Then when the new GTX660 comes in, it will be about $200 or so. maybe trade up or add later for more iRay render power? supposed to be released soon here in US. but if u got the cash...go for better...such as the 580.
make sure u/they unintsall all instacnes of nvidia drivers, and do a registry clean etc in safe mode and reboot, then install as usual.
how could I know if I [removed] up my mother board....
I keep trying to do all kind of fixes that I find online.
and max wont work
always same error
even with the native VGA drivers.
I am sacared I [removed] up somethin else and not my graphic card
cuz I am able to run other progrmas like cryengine 3 and lumion
wich USE ALOT OF GRAPHIC CARD!
don;t worry...it;s prob the graphics card...let them replace it and go from there. it’s called a systematic approach...start with the easier cheaper possible solutions first and work your way up… it’s prob your video card....just go from there.
just becasue it works with the other software...it’s probably built not to play well with 3ds amx..when the more typical cards do… i.e. NON “Ti” cards.
its clear that my nvidia gforce 550 ti video card
coused all the problems
right now I am currently working under VGA mode with out any video card drivers
I need to finish my proyect before I get it replace for a new one!
but this si the solution.
you have to erase this folders:
C: \ Users \ <your.name.here> \ AppData \ local \ Autodesk \ 3dsmax \
2012 - 32bit
C: \ Users \ <your.name.here> \ AppData \ Roaming \ Autodesk \ 3dsmax \ 3ds Max
good luck to everyone!
and thanks for all the help!
sounds like u went and deleted a crap load of stuff just to delete the MaxStartUI files to reset things.... if it works for ya..great...but sounds rather ...well.... drastic...like using a axe vs a scapel to fix it.
that problem may come back seeming all these “Ti” cards have this problem… persoanlly, after u finish your project, ditch that bitch of a card and get something better.
