probably...just don;t expect much. most things like nitrous i think require min 1GB video memory. u can prob get by with it for most stuff tho. just try and see...but if u can...always get the best video/cpu/memory for the money.
Intel i7 930 2.8Ghz 8 CORE HT / CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Plus (no OC yet!)
Nvidia EVGA GTX 260 v296.10 driver (Nitrous in max) / Dual Dell Professional P2311H 23” Displays
ASUS P6X58D-E / Corsair Dominator 12GB 1600 DDR3 / Antec tp750 blue / Antec 300 Illusion
Windows 7 Pro x64 SP1
3ds max design 2012 x64 SP2 (since the 1st DOS version!), Mudbox 2012 x64 SP3, Softimage 2012 x64 SP1, Maya 2012 x64 HF2, Adobe CS5.5 x64, CorelDRAW x5 SP3, Painter 12, etc etc

thanx timd1971 for replying
actually i have max 2012-64 bit on another machine which i use to work. i wanted my laptop as satellite machine for DBR. so i wanted to have same version of max on both machines. but link at autodesk site says minimum 256 mb graphic memory. so here is a confusion for me wether this minimum of 256 mb is least to tun max or least for the best performance. ( my laptop needs to be repaired thats y i cannot check by installing max at that system)

If you just use it as a render slave it may work…
3ds Max 9 thru 2013
Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit OS SP1
Dual Intel® Xeon® 6 core X5650 @ 2.67GHz CPU 36GB RAM
NVIDIA Quadro 4000
450GB HDD (x3) and 2TB HDD
3ds Max 2012 Certified Professional Models to Motion

It will work if it installs on the system. Using DBR, the computer will not launch Max, it will only use the mental ray satellite node that runs as a service in the background and this is completely independent of the graphics card.

According to the System Requirements, it needs a minimum of 256MB of V-RAM, 1GB recommended.
It’s possible it may still work though. But don’t expect it to do any good with nitrous or iray. Best to revert to DX9 for display and steer clear of GPU rendering.

It will definitely work. Four of my render servers have only 32MB of dedicated onboard graphics memory. You couldn’t really run Max on something like that (though it will open up, which I tried once just for kicks in Trial mode).

Since the render to slaves should be set to “Do not render to Virual Render Window”, I see no reason why it will not work....

be sure to start Max 2012 using the D3D startup option. This way Nitrous will not get initialized and plain old D3D is a lot less demanding on the GPU memory
The startup command would look like that line
3dsmax.exe -vx

Good point!
But really, pc’s are so chep anymore… U could even find some non bleeding edge equipment to do much more than the laptop. Shoot...they have those computer recycling companies that get room fully of workstations from all over.... Could buy a batch of those that prob even have quadros and make your farm.

i wanted my laptop as satellite machine for DBR.
I seem to have totally overlooked this bit.
If it is only for DBR, don’t worry about the V-RAM, it is irrelevant. It’s not used in rendering and the satellite service doesn’t even load the the Max UI, so that’s not a problem either.
Just make sure the laptop also has a 64 bit OS and 64 bit Max installed.
