Car paint Error - Phen 0.18...

I have a student having a problem that I am unsure how to proceed.

He is using a Daylight System (MR lights) and MR renderer.
I troubleshot the scene and found that when I removed the Car paint Material the error went away.  I tried adding a new Car Paint and the problem happened again.  The error is:

“PHEN 0.18 error: A ray encountered an invalid color (NaN), using black instead.”

For now I have directed him to create a Blended Arch and Design material for the paint, but I am wondering what the problem is here.
