Now we have a project that I need (atleast I think I do) to use 3ds Max to help me "unfold" a 3d skin. It's a series of seating banquettes that change height & shape as it follows the room. I have a 3d solid object of the overall shape. I'm trying to "unfold" the outside skin so we can cut it out on our CNC. I've gotten as far as: Downloading trial 3DS Importing shape from AutoCAD Applying Unwrap UVW modifier Opening in editor Unfold Map option... but now I'm stuck... It doesn't look quite right. The object is round, but everything looks very segmented, so I'm sure there a factor I'm missing on the import... Also it unfolds certain areas, but not others... I'm confused on the stiching back together... Also when I though I had done it right - used the channel info under utilities to paste back on the mesh layer... when I brought it back into AutoCAD the scale was way off... I'm sure to the seasoned user I sound like an idiot in over my head... I'd like to learn more about the program, but currently I need to get this project done and I'm not getting anywhere watching the tutorial videos... Advise? The attachments: Octopus is the real object that I'll need to do eventually... Mockup is the small 12" sloped cylinder I'm trying to make to prove the intent before the real project. It's a simple project using Rayfire. I have some text that is broken up and i want the fragments sucked into a vortex. I got the vortex working perfectly but i'm having an issue with the vortex keeping the fragments within it's cone. The fragments just seem to follow the vortex's rotation only and then flow away from the vortex center. basically i would like them to bunch up in the center of the vortex. I can do this with particles no problem, but with objects it's not working. I've used it in the past with no problems. Here's what I've tried to make the problem go away.... I apply UVW Maps Clearing, then stack Unwrap UVs on top, and when applied the highlighted faces from xView's Overlapped UVW faces show up again. I've also applied UVW Maps Clearing then collapsed the stack and then apply Unwrap UVs with the same results. I post this here because I can't unwrap and relax the mesh for texturing because of the Overlapped UVW face issue. I think I'm missing a step or doing something wrong. Not sure what. When I am running the new version, both the old and new application icons appear on my screen (as though both versions are open). I also have old 2013 folders in the Autodesk folder. I didn't realize I was supposed to uninstall them. There isn't an "uninstall" tool for the 2013 files. The viewport canvas is a great tool, I have had it working in previous versions of max but in 2013 I just can't get it to work. The object it's self has been unwrapped and collapsed to poly no different to what I've done in the past. I bring up the viewport canvas dialog box and everything is normal until I select the paint brush tool and the object disappears, it's still in the scene but I just can't see it, it seems as though the viewport clipping has become very narrow, closing the dialog box the object returns. I've tried large and small objects, nitrous and direct x, and nothing seems to work. I hope someone can help me this, I'm on a tight deadline. However, the tool uses Predefined 'Vertex' % and not Predefined Polygon %. I need to reduce the polygon count by 60% 40% and 18% can anyone suggest how this could be achieved?
