Hey all,

I just started using max 2013 after upgrading from 2011. I read about how you can’t import your old UI settings so I started to customize some new ones, saved them to the MaxStart file and the next time I loaded max its gone back to the defaults. The same thing is happening for my preferences. I changed my undo levels to 200 yesterday and today they’re back at 20. What’s going on?

There would seem to be two setarate issues there, so let’s try and sort the Maxstart one first.

Customise > Configure User Paths
Where is the Project Path pointing to?
What does the “Maxstart” entry in the list say?
Are you saving Maxstart.max to the folder specified in the “Maxstart” entry?

Max 4.2 through 2014, Composite 2014.
XP-64 (SP2).
nVidia 9800GTX+ (512MB) (Driver 314.22).
i5-3570K @ 4.4GHz, 8Gb Ram, DX9.0c.

ok so apparently in this version of max, the program no longer uses “MyDocs” as its default destination. Right now the MaxStartUI.clrx file is saved in Username/AppData/Local/AUtodesk/3dsmax/2013-64bit/ENU/en-us/UI

I’ve tried saving over that file and it doesn’t save my settings. I’ve also tried saving my own file TorQueMoD.clrx and same thing. I’ve also tried saving to the MyDocs/3dsmax/ui folder and that doesn’t work either.

Its not remembering color changes, snap changes, grid settings, anything.

Same issue at both my home computer and work computer.

Your initial post mentioned “maxstart” (without an extension) which usually refers to maxstart.max, not the UI files, hence my reply.

Don’t change the ones you may find in the install folder, only the ones in your user folders. Max hasn’t changed the location of the user folder - MS / Windows has.

You do (should) not need to save changes - they should happen automatically. Saving is for keeping a separate copy of them in case you need to reinstall or move to another machine.

When you installed, did you do so as Administrator? And run Max at least once as Administrator? If you didn’t then it may not have been set up correctly and may not work on an LUA account (non-admin).  Try changing the shortcut you use to start Max to “RunAs Administrator” - it may help - it’s almost certainly a permissions (or installation) problem.

Sorry, forgot to mention I actually have 19 years of computer experience. Normally this sort of stuff doesn’t stump me but its being really buggy. Maxstart is the name of the default ui scheme as well apparently.

At home I only have an admin account so no issue there… at work is another story. I’ll double check but my account is an admin though maybe max wasn’t run in admin mode yet so I’ll try that when I’m there next.

I was mostly just wondering if this was a known bug… I’m guessing no :P

Your guess is likely correct - certainly here I have no issues with settings not sticking, but I am still on XP and I run as Administrator.

There has been the occasional similar thread before, but IIRC it has always been down to either a bad install or permissions.

So after some more tests, its mostly saving all of my UI changes I’ve noticed except for the color change I made to the grid (which is really the only one I care about).
I change the intensity to 64 so I can clearly see the highlights again, but every time I run the program it drops the changes. Never had an issue with previous versions of max. And both my work and home systems are administrator accounts.

Just tried that here, and as above the changes do “stick”.

very strange. Well, I guess I just have to suffer through it till its fixed in another install or a patch.

Thanks for trying to help me figure it out anyway.
