Does anyone know how to make VIZ remove hidden lines/objects in wireframe renderings?
(( see attached photo for samples ))

The sample on the right is a Photoshop’d version of what I’m looking for.

Not sure about Viz, but in Max I would apply a simple material with the “Wireframe” option turned on.
However, it seems to go “wrong” once you can see “inside” the box.

Max 4.2 through 2013.
XP-64 (SP2)
NVidia 9800GTX-512 (Driver 266.58).
Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz, 8Gb Ram, DX9.0c.

Thanks for the input Steve.  I had already tried using that approach (( using materials set to “wire” )) but didn’t do what I was wanting.

I did some more research this weekend and found two products which are Plugins for Max.
1.) Illustrate!—http://www.davidgould.com/ $399
2.) Pencil+—http://www.psoft.co.jp/en/ $410

Both products allow you to render out outlines (hiding all geometry that is hidden from view) Below is a test I did with the Pencil+ plugin.

If anyone has a FREE way to accomplish this same effect using MAX only or an inexpensive plugin/script, please let me know.  Thanks!!

Vern

well you can try this ‘hack’

1.select your object
2.clone a ‘copy’
3.add a lattice modifier on top and set it to struts only...dial up the diameter and segments
4.put a different material on that version

note if you find some of the ‘wires are lost add a push modifier to ‘’push’’ out the geometry from the base model below

like i say it’s a hack but it’s free!

also if you use mental ray you could use the contour shader for outline effect such as in cartoons

Thanks Steve!

I think that last one might work, although the Illustrate! plugin is much easier and has tons more options (( but also costs $400! )) For now I think I’ll try using the contour shader option.

Below is an example using the default scanline wireframe VS the contour shading in mental ray.
Thanks again Steve for your help!!

good result!

hey that’s what the forum’s are for :^)

there’s also a way using a fall off map and photoshop layer blending if you want to try that out...i’ll dig out the link after tea.

..you might be wondering how come i know a load of ways to get toon Lines…
here’s why!

my latest frelance project for Felix Catfood
models made in 3dsmax and rendered over in lightwave [started out as a total max project but i found lightwave was faster and gave more consistant lines than ink and paint...didn’t try the contour shader at that point as i was a newbie with mental ray back in jan/feb when the spring/summer version was made...just updated the scene to reflect a xmas theme.

Thanks Steve!

Very impressive work!!

I took a look at the Felix website and it’s awesome!!
Did you do the Flash programming or was that done by
someone else?

What did you like better about Lightwave over Max for the
Felix animation?

I would still be interested to take a look at the link showing
how to use the fall off map and photoshop layer blending to
achieve a similar effect. (( whenever you get a chance ))

Thanks again for your input!!
You definitely have some extra respect from my end
after watching the Felix animation!!
