Jessica, most people agree that you should model in whichever program you are more comfortable with. Many have argued that one is better than the other, for various reasons. I like Viz, because I know Viz better. Others model in ADT, because they are more efficient with it.
As far as your import problem, could you explain the details a little more?

WELL WHEN I BRING IN A DRAWING IT COMES IN IN THE LAYER COLORS.. IE: BLUE FOR WALLS .. PINK FOR WINDOWS OR WHATEVER I PUT THE LAYER COLOR AS.. I TRY TO ADD A MATERIAL TO THE WINDOW FRAME AND THE WHOLE WINDOW GLASS AND ALL TURNS TO THAT MATERIAL.. I TRY TO FIND ITS SUB OBJECTS BUT THERE ARE NONE JUST THE WINDOW ITSELF.. THERE IS NO SUBOBJECT FOR THE FRAME SASH GLASS.. ETC.... IT DRIVES ME NUTS. I GUESS I HAVE TO MODEL IN VIZ TO GET THE MATERIALS TO ATTACH RIGHT/.

When you import the drawing, make sure in the Import Options window that
“Create one scene object for each ADT object” is unchecked. When I did a
test with this checked, the window was one object and said “Linked Geometry”
in the Modify tab. With it unchecked, each piece of the window was a
separate object. Also, if it does show as “Linked Geometry” you can still
get to the Material IDs by applying an Edit Mesh, or converting to Editable
Mesh.
