I understand that I can save only one view for each viewport type (top, front, etc.). What I really want to do is to save multiple perspective views...seems easy enough in theory, but as far as I can tell it can’t be done! Argh, is any possible way to do this?

Assuming Viz is the same as Max in this respect, each Viewport can be set to any view, so you can have all 4 set as perspective if you want. The configuration is saved with the scene, not in the config files.
Max 4.2 through 2013.

NVidia 9800GTX-512 (Driver 266.58).

In Viz, when you chose another viewport and select a preset view (say “Top") you can pan, zoom, or rotate and save that view. The trouble is once you change the perspective Viz by default calls it “User” view. Again you can save this, but only one of this view type. So basically I can have two: Perspective and User. But I want more.... LOL.

"User” view is simply an orthographic view not aligned to the main axes. Or put another way, Top Left Front are User views which happen to be on the axes. If you activate the viewport and press “P” it should switch to Perspective - not the same thing as simply rotating in an Orthographic viewport (which will change to User).
If that doesn’t work, or selecting Perspective from the viewport label right-click menu doesn’t work, then I can’t help because I don’t have Viz to try it on.
