I have been working with VIZ 2008 on my laptop, but at school we have VIZ 2006. When i try to open a file at school [2006] that i had worked on at home [2008], i am unable to do so.
is there any way to save files in 2008 in a compatibility mode / save as a previous version format.
I have tried “save as” and the only option i get is “.max”. I know all versions of VIZ use this file format, and i have even tried exporting the file as “.3ds”, “.dwg” and “.dxf” but nothing seems to help.

No. Viz is basically a cut down Max, and Max files from one version have never been compatible with previous versions. There are no other “save as” options.
The other file types you mentioned are not Max files, they are commonly used import/export files. You should be able to Export (NOT save) to any of them and be able to Import (NOT file | open) them at school.
However, most of those formats will export a Mesh, so you will definitely lose the “stack”. FBX may be the best choice - there are FBX plugins for several recent versions of Max, I don’t know if they will work with Viz.
FBX Plugins
Max 4.2 through 2012 (SP2+SAP).
XP-64 (SP2)
NVidia 9800GTX-512 (Driver 266.58).
Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz, 8Gb Ram, DX9.0c.
