Over the weekend I got to try out VIZ a bit for the first time, and it frankly seemed identical to Max. Forgive my ignorance, but what are the major differences between the two? Many thanks.

Try this thread Bruce - it includes a post detailing a fair number of differences.
Max 4.2 through 2014, Composite 2014.
XP-64 (SP2).
nVidia 9800GTX+ (512MB) (Driver 314.22).
