Just playing around with FPS in viewport as a quick test of drivers etc for 3d max design 2009(sp1 un-installed) on vista 64 ultimate SP1

dell m90 dual core 2 t7600 2.33ghz
4gig ram
quadro fx 2500m [dox optimised 181.22:performance]
Space pilot

hopefully the attached max file is torus knot 1000segsx200sides, polys: 400,000 with lighting&shadows on (sm3.0 &cast shadows to default lighting)

FPS on manually rotating torus at 60rpm ish= wireframe 300fps, smooth +highlights + edged faces 31fps

Interested in getting geforce based card ie 8800gtx and upwards fps to compare with quadro fx.

I know there are more factors to graphics card settings etc but we can look into that later.

Cheers if you are interested.

guess nobody’s interested, thought it might have been a quick way to test 3d max actual viewport performance.

I’m really interested, but I didn’t upgrade to 2009 yet.

could you do my Test here??  http://www.evermotion.org/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=72251
it’s a 2008 File, you will be able to open it and doing it.

I’ve been doing videocard test for Years.

Thanks!!!

tried the torus in design 2009.
ATI Radeon HD 4870 1GB card - drivers straight out of the box (brand new)
Quad q6600 @ 2.92GHz
XP Pro 32bit, 4gb ram

~265 FPS in Shaded mode - 243 in wireframe - 230 in shaded+edges

Intel q9550 OC 3.4
ATI Firepro v4800
6GB Ram
Win7 Pro x64
Max Design 2011 x64/Composite newb… I also use Blender.

Here are some numbers via 3ds max Design 2010 SP1 (not 2009 mind you!) Direct3D 9.0 driver (no AA) just to give you an idea of a way less than mediocre machine.

Orbited left/right 60rpm or so, no consistancy here for accurate results, but some averages nonetheless. This test really needs to be made consistant; animated basically, no user interaction of the orbit tool. Zoomed size of object probably makes a difference also.

As opened directly unchanged 1 viewport full.

±200 fps (smooth + highlights; edged faces)
±220 fps (smooth + highlights)
±250 fps (wireframe)

tried also in Hardware mode no shadows, no Ambient Occl. No Exposure COntrol. Pretty much about the same numbers. WITH SHADOWS ON AND AMBIENT OCCLUSION ON I got ±170 average fps.

(wondering if MORE objects in scene is where Quadros shine vs. Geforce; so copied 8 more for 9 TOTAL COPIES (not instances) and spun them all at once) non-HW results (HW shading about the same):

±130 fps (smooth + highlights; edged faces)
±140 fps (smooth + highlights)
±150 fps (wireframe)

Nvidia GeForce 9800GT (XFX) 512MB GDDR3 (PCI Express 2.0; actually this particular crappola MB restricts to 4x in Express slot!!!!! Does not do 8x or 16x!!!)

Motherboard Asrock 4CoreDual-SATA2 Crappola with Crappola Intel E2140 1.6GHZ Dual Core (not Duo). 2MB 667mhz ddr2 ram, Vista SP1.

Considering this shameful setup (video card is good though) 3ds max 2010 still works pretty darn well SURPRISINGLY.  Can’t wait to get all my parts together for a i7 920 / GTX260 / Win 7 setup shortly...sure performance will be night and day!

Keep in mind that all this is pretty general, but gives a idea of the AVERAGE fps.  So you see that my crap rig isn’t doing anything like 24 fps or soemthing low… keeps up pretty good with this particular test.  I am assuming an older PC with maybe onboard video or cheap video card would do badly.... single or double digits fps? This test really isn’t controlled or calibrated in any way. Pretty arbitrary.

Intel i7 930 2.8Ghz 8 CORE HT / CoolerMaster Hyper 212 Plus (no OC yet!)
Nvidia EVGA GTX 260 v296.10 driver (Nitrous in max) / Dual Dell Professional P2311H 23” Displays
ASUS P6X58D-E / Corsair Dominator 12GB 1600 DDR3 / Antec tp750 blue / Antec 300 Illusion
Windows 7 Pro x64 SP1
3ds max design 2012 x64 SP2 (since the 1st DOS version!), Mudbox 2012 x64 SP3, Softimage 2012 x64 SP1, Maya 2012 x64 HF2, Adobe CS5.5 x64, CorelDRAW x5 SP3, Painter 12, etc etc
Wacom Intuos4 v6.2.0w5 / 3DConnexion Space Navigator (drv6.15.2)/ Logitech Performance MX mouse (5.33.14)

This thread has been untouched for over 8 months. By “bumping” it you’re pushing current threads down until they drop off the 1st page and thus out of sight (and out of mind). Probably best to resist the urge to reply to old threads, if possible ;)

Sorry Steve,

I’m bumping it too. Found it too interesting XD

Anywho, max 64 2010 sp1, win7 64. c2q 6600 @ 3ghz, ati 4850 with 32x antialiasing:

smooth + edged faces = 428 fps
smooth = 430 fps
wireframe= 437 fps
smooth + hardware shaded= 420 fps
smooth+ hardware+shadows+AO= 300 fps
