| 3ds Max crashes on startup.
|
|
|
I currently have a trial version of 3ds max installed on my computer for school but I am having an issue of 3ds max crashing on startup. When I start the program I get the slash screen but shortly after I get a window stating, “A software problem has caused 3ds max to close unexpectedly.” I’ve tried the most common “fixes”, updating graphic card drivers, updating directX, running it in change graphics mode, etc. I’ve search the bottomless pits of the internet looking for a solution with no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Current PC specs are:
* Windows XP (Service Pack 2)
* AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+
* Nvidia Geforce 8500GT
* 4GBs of RAM

try loading WinXP Service Pack 3
and apply 3ds max 2010 SP1
Got it to work. Solution: I did what Killmats suggested and installed WinXP SP3. After SP3 installed I reinstalled 3ds Max but this time I got an error about the framedyn.dll, I clicked “OK” and let 3ds Max finish installing. I looked in the DLLCache folder to replace the damaged dll but it wasn’t in there so I simply downloaded a new framedyn.dll. Now 3ds Max starts without any problems.
Thanks Killmats.

I have the same problem.
System description:
Athlon 64 3200+ (2 GHz)
4 GB RAM
Windows XP Pro (32 bit) SP3
Original video card: ATI Radeon X700, 256 MB, with current drivers
Replacement video card: EVGA nVidea GTX 260, 896 MB, core 216, with current drivers
3DS Max 2010 SP1
What I’ve tried:
1. Run with -h and select OpenGL or Software - alone and with each of the following iterations
2. Reinstall (including SP1)
3. Remove and reinstall (with SP1)
4. Remove, delete folders, scrub registry, and reinstall (with SP1)
5. As in #4, but also using MSConfig to disable all programs and services that aren’t required to run Max.
6. Remove all Autodesk software, delete folders, scrub registry, and reinstall
7. Upgrade video adapter, install latest drivers, and repeat all of the above
8. Remove 2 GB of RAM, and repeat all of the above (replace when it doesn’t work)
9. Install on a borrowed lackluster laptop - success! Too bad I have to uninstall it and return the laptop
About all that’s left for me to try is installing Windows 7, but I’m nervous about running a beta OS (even if it is an RC) on my work machine. Oh, well - it can’t get any worse, I suppose.
