Hello

I have bought a new computer just 2 weeks ago with the following spec:

Motherboard: ASUS Rampage Extreme III
Graphics: ASUS GeForce GTX 480
Memory: 12GB DDR3 @ 1333mhz
HDD: WD 1TB SATA6

I run Windows 7 Ultimate x64 with all of the latest driver available. I also run 3ds max 2011 Design in this system with directX 9 drivers. The graphics driver I use now is

the latest in the 2xx series from Nvidia.

My old card, a GeForce 8800GTX performed MUCH better in 3ds max than this 480 card. I have nothing but problems with the 480 card in 3ds max. But in games like Call of Duty

Modern Warfare 2 with all settings set to max, it rocks, no lag and no problems what so ever. But in 3ds max there are many problems in viewports and that max hangs and stop

working, none of this problems was on the 8800 card.

To me, this 480 card is a monster and should perform 10x better in 3ds max than the 8800 card, but that is not the case, at least not in my home…

So, is there anyone else who have a 480 card running 3ds max?
Anyone have any idea what the problem can be? It’s not hardware related I think due the games I tried runs 100% great with full settings.
Can it be that the card is new and Nvidia did really bad drivers?
Can a older driver be better than a newer one?

Thanks for any reply!

Is that the one which is effectively 2 cards in one? If so that’s the problem. Max cannot use SLI (or crossfire) and will only see half the card, and therefore half the memory.

Max 4.2 through 2013.
XP-64 (SP2)
NVidia 9800GTX-512 (Driver 266.58).
Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz, 8Gb Ram, DX9.0c.

Hello, no, the GTX 480 is only one card with one GPU but you can use it in SLI but I don’t use it that way, I only have one card so that is not the problem.

try set windows 7 display features to ‘best performance’ http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1908-visual-effects-settings-change.html . what are your settings in max with in the ‘configure driver’ dialog?

Hello

Thanks for the reply!
Well, to change everything in Win 7 to “Best performance” is not the issue here, my old card 8800GTX performed much better in max with all settings in Win 7 as default.

My settings in max under drivers are DirectX 9 and everything else is set to default except that I ticked “Match bitmaps as close as possible” on both places, that I did on my old 8800 card to.

I think it’s a driver issue, I also tried Arion using Cuda and Arion crashed on me, and in max, really slow viewport performance when you load up a scene that runs great on a 8800 card.

NOT fun this to have spend a lot of money on a card that is many years newer than the old one and the spec is much higher but still it sucks using 3ds max…

it’s a pity but it seems you have to play a game if you want to use the power of the latest hardware…

I use a Nvidia Geforce 9600 GT and would like to have more viewport performance - but what to do?

1. Buy a modern GTX480 and get problems? NO!
2. Buy a old generation over expensive Quadro and use it like every stadard gaming card with DX9? NO!

If you want to use modern workstation graphics - start gaming… :-(

Hi iceman32,

Did you try to unistall your current nvidia driver and install an older version?
(either bu using the driver CD that comes with your card or by downloading one from nvidias site)

Cause often times the latest drivers for gaming cards don’t play well in DCC apps.

I’m interested in a solution to this as well. I’m trying to use a Geforce GTX 460 with 3ds Max design 2011 as well using Direct 3d 9

Having the same problem here BUT it’s a 3dsmax problem, just tried 4 graphic cards, 2 Nvidia (GTX 480, GTX 260) 2 ATI. Latest drivers and the one working on other workstation used.

The GTX 260 and the 2 older ATI card worked fine (the ATIs had crappy speed, but no lag) in other Workstation with 3ds 2010 and 2011.
I have a new Dell Precision T5500 with 2x 6 Core 2.66 Mhz Xeon with totally 12 cores plus 12 HT cores.
Win 7 pro 64bit 24 GB RAM

3dsmax 2010 and 2011 all updates installed

A noticeable very long lag (1-5 sec) on moving/rotating scene per mouse buttons.
The rotate/hand icons works fine.
I just can’t believe 3dsmax isn’t prepared for the newest Xeons they are a few months on the market now.
I tried disabling Hyper-threading, but the error remains.
NEED INSTANT HELP, can’ use my 3dsmax this way.

Same problem here.  I’ve tried the suggestions above and have had no luck so far.

Even low poly models slow the viewpoint to an unworkable speed.  I use Vue also but I’ve had no problems with it with huge models.

If anyone resolves this, please let us know.
