I have recently installed 3DS Max Design 2010 (with SP1) and the new backburner (2008.1.1) software on my farm at work.

I have noticed that backburner has changed the way it writes its running files so that now there is a different setup depending on the user currently logged onto the machine.

My problem is that when I go to render on the farm and tick the ‘include maps’ button, everything gets sent to the manager except the xref files. I mean all the maps and the master file get archived and sent to the manager but it fails to take the xrefs with it. I then get the error ‘scene xref… could not be found’. I totally dont understand what is going on.

Is anyone out there getting the same issues as I am?

I have heared of people having problems with the Include Maps option in the 2010 version. The best thing to do is use a full UNC path to reference external files.

thanks Samab,

I found this link from the Autodesk website;
http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/ser...d=13925477&linkID=9241177

My work around this problem has been to work from a shared directory that all my servers can connect too (using full UNC pathing). I did hit a connection issue which I worked out. Because server is running as a ‘service’ I had to make the client run under a special user with permissions to all file shares. Otherwise they couldnt get the xrefs and maps.

However I still want to try and figure out how to ‘inlcude maps’ when submitting a job to ‘Manager’ because I dont fully understand how the clients pick up existing jobs. For example if Im working on a job and set off a preview render not all my client machines might pick up the job. Then I continue working on the job updating models etc. When I go home for the day and some of the client machines pick up the job. Do the new clients start rendering half way through the render with the updated model? Wont I get frames that flash between old and new models depending on when they picked up the model???

It’s in the help file that include maps include Xrefs, even in the Max 2012 help.  But this is not true now.  There is no way to include Xrefs in a zipped package when sending a job to the queue.  If the Xref is in a local Dropbox, for example, you’re s--t out of luck.
