I was discussing graphics programs with an Adobe Illustrator Instructor and she said it was crucial to get a mouse that was suited for doing graphics creative work in 2D programs like Illustrator, PhotoShop, etc.

I had never really thought about it before but like anything else there is usually a component that is more suited for a particular task so why wouldn’t a mouse be too.

Has anybody gone from using a standard DPI mouse to using one with greater precision (like a gaming mouse)and found that to be a worth while move for modeling in a 3D application (3DSMax, Maya, etc) and other graphic programs?

Yes, it really does matter, because i had a very very old mouse a while ago, with very low DPI, and it was annoying, because it didn’t have a smooth movement, and the cursor kept on warping all around the screen, but now i got the Razer Diamondback gaming mouse, and i love it. Its very smooth and efficient, there are a many newer versions from Razer right now, but im satisfied with mine...i recommend you to buy a mouse from Razer, that is if you want a new mouse…

I use a BenQ P150 mouse, 3 buttons and I’m satisfied for now, and yes, using a good mouse is important.

WACOM are awesome… really necessary for PhotoShop, Painter, Mudbox type work period.  I’ve never really tried incorporating it in 3ds though...may give it a try....  but so used to the mouse, alt, scroll wheel, 3d connexion space nav etc.... so the Wacom may be a hard thing to get used to once highly dependant on mouse.  You could use the mouse that comes with the Wacom, but i find the mouse shape not very good compared to high end Microsoft/Logitech mice.  Some older wireless mice have bad lag also...so beware… I hear the NEW Logitech are the fastest and no notice between wired.  The New Microsodt mice are also fast but minutley slower than the Logitech...but not noticeable either.  Beware of this particualar wireless mouse:
Microsoft Wireless Laser Mouse 8000

Very nice design adn appealing, espeacilly when paired with keyboard… but this mouse LAGS big time!  Sucks hard.  The scroll wheel doesn’t have tactile feedback...doesn’t spin well...too much drag.  Very slow response.  Maybe it’s the Bluetooth????  I don’t know...but I think the NEWER stuff is good...not sure, but what i heard, maybe some pepole can verify.

Another thing, that mouse is designed for BOTH left and right handed… not good...differnt feel… if our right handed...get a right handed one!

Buttons are also in the way, easy toa ccidentaly press them.  Really terrible in 3ds...especailly when using ALT+Middle mouse button (scroll wheel hold down) never seems to work right at all...terrible.

The new Logitech MX looks very promising.

I hear the LASER are better than the OPTICAL....  also not sure if RF type or Blutooth is better???? maybe the Logitech MX has it’s own type of communication?

actually they have many differnt levels of wacom tablets and pricing...you’d be surprised what you can do with the cheaper BAMBOO line of tablets for low price.  can even find them cheap on ebay...even the Intuous $$$ ones...which are the best and really the way to go for the best stuff around that has tilt function etc...great for photoshop, painter etc.

try out the Logitech MX Performance wireless mouse...awesome! but $$$ but worth it. Nice scrolling NO LAG WHATSOEVER!!! That was my biggest concern… and that is nto a worry after buying and keeping.  I had a MS laser Wireless 8000...total crud… scroll button never worked right, had to press REAL hard...just crud… LAGGED biged time.

If you don;t liek it take it back (you prob won’t though)… Staples, Office DEpot, Best Buy etc.  I am sure some of the other gaming mice are also nice too… but I don’t like anyhting that look “gamey” on my workstations. All those lights, vents, wings, crap just looks tacky.... I guess what I really need is a iMac!  : ) the MX mouse design is a good median between gaming systems and professional setups.

I like the switch below the scroll wheel… you can set to have ratcheting feedback...or smooth fast scrollling.  3ds max 2010 design still zooms to center of viewport using scoll whell no matter what though… if you want smooth zooming about MOUSE POINT, use ALT-SCROLL WHELL CLICK (MMB)-CTRL.
