I, too, am having this problem, hangs on startup and reports “The software license check out failed.  Error 20” and then MAX quits to the desktop.  Running 3dsm 2010 SP1 on Win 7 x64.  AMD64 X2 5600+ CPU, Nvidia chipset 790a on ASUS board, 2X 8800GTS640Mb SLI, 4GB RAM, etc. blahblahblah.  Program was running fine for months and then this just started out of the blue.  Have tried reinstalling and updating, tried the licensing hotfix, tried a manual uninstall (deleted all folders and scrubbed the registry) then reinstall with SP1 update and hotfix, all with no success.  The manuall uninstall was, i admit, one of my own creations as I don’t have any documentation on the proper procedures for that (if anyone can post this info it would be helpful). Does anyone have any info on this problem or anyone out there with this error have a solution? I’d be forever grateful.  Thanks!

I wanted to bump this thread because it seems I can’t find any answers anywhere on the net. this and like one other site (which was a bootleg download site) was the only site I could find even mention of this error. I’m a student at an artinstitute and I’m in dire need of getting max 10 to work on my computer because max 10 isn’t backwards compatible *(go figure) with 9. If I can’t get max 10 to work I can’t even work at my home without doing the whole annoying export as OBJ. So if anyone could please take this question seriously and explain what’s wrong with our computers, I’d greatly appreciate it so I can get back to work at school.
