Hi,

I need some advice on what graphic card to get. I will be using a 8 core Mac Pro with 12 GB ram. The one I had in mind was the following:

NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800 for Mac

I have no idea about what graphic cards are good for rendering. Could someone give me some advice on what to buy and if the one mentioned above is good? I will only be using it for rendering and playing games.

Thanks

I have no idea about what graphic cards are good for rendering.

None - because the graphics card plays no part in the rendering process.

From what I can gather the Quadro cards are not the best when it comes to games, so a high-end gaming card may be more suitable, unless the primary function of the PC is Max, not games.

Max 4.2 through 2012 (SP2+SAP).
XP-64 (SP2)
NVidia 9800GTX-512 (Driver 266.58).
Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz, 8Gb Ram, DX9.0c.

Yeah it will be Max 80% but the 20% gaming are new highly demanding games like Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 etc.

Do you think a Mac Pro 8 core with 12GB ram is a good machine though? Does the ram make a difference? Or would it be better if I get the 2.93 8 core instead of the 2.26?

Any recommendation for a specific graphic card?

Thanks

I know nothing about Macs I’m afraid.

The supported / tested cards are listed here - that should probably be the first place you look.

Thats a great source thanks a lot.

Just in terms of windows on a PC are Two 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon processors any good? Is RAM important in any way? Is 12GB going to make a difference to 6GB?

Thanks

There’s a good number of people here using Xeon based systems, so I’d say they are OK.

Memory is only a problem if you need it and don’t have it. 6GB is a fair bit - I’d be tempted to start with 6 and see how you get on - you may never need the other 6 - depends on how big the scenes are you have to work with.

I’m not really a hardware guy so probably better to wait for someone who is ;)
