I don’t think I would necessarily be using the video editing programs for editing as much as my instructor had said it’s a better of making sure you have part of your work if your computer crashes. He said that there have been plenty of times where he or someone else has left the computer rendering overnight or when you leave to run errands. When they get back if they save it as a movie, it’s gone, where as if you save it as images you will have everything prior to when it crashed.
Hi Kkoobati,
After estimating the work you will be doing, I have come down to this:
You are going to be continuing to become more advanced semester by semester, so here is my shot
A Intel Core 2 Duo E8500: If you are a little budget conscience and want to save $150. Will provide pretty fast rendering times for what you are doing. You will experience some slowness with frames though, and your video rendering might be a tad slow. But as you said you render image by image. So basically just the video rendering will be slower.
or
Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550: Rendering will be almost twice as fast with this, it is safe to get when you come across advanced lighting and things like that.
4 GB of RAM: Can not go wrong with it, and if your dad is building the system, I recommend getting a board that can support up to 8 GB, for room to upgrade.
8500 GT 256 MB, pretty good graphics card, since I’m guessing you aren’t going to do any high-poly modeling like Mudbox or character model
For the Hard Drive a 500 GB @ 7200 RPM, would be great for exporting and importing between AutoCAD and Max.
Have your dad look at this;)
Hope this Helps

You are correct, in that there there is a LOT of info here. We will digest it (and come back with any questions that may arise), but thanks to all who contributed, we have been provided with an excellent direcion in which to proceed.
As an aside, my daughter called to Autodesk a couple of minutes ago with a mouse problem. While she does not have a tech contract, the tech support person was kind enough to help her. Along the way she learned that 3DSM is not a stable program on an Apple platform, although they are working on it. In addition, she is just beginning to work with 3DSM. As I understand it, this program is, or is rapidly becoming, THE program for the field and she wants to become facile with it. If she does put in the time and the hardware is a limitation her, then a new workstation it will be. I see that a 64-bit OS is very valuable, and I will design the system around a quad core cpu.
Boomerang and Austin, you have both been incredibly helpful, and we are very grateful for your guidance.

my computers configuratn is-
intel xeon
48 gb ram
1 gb nvidia quadro 600
win 7 64bit
but when i open a scene of mine 3d max freezes,, but still 100% of ram or cpu is not used,, i am sure that the file is not corrupt and the operating system i use is also win 7 64bit so why is it that max is not using 100% of ram and cpu?
why it gets frozen widout using all the resources?
do i need to buy sum other hardware in order to open that file?
