First: READ the supplied documentation, I’m not going to copy and paste the help file here.

Issue: when installing backburner as a service it doesn’t work properly. This happens (at least) with 3DSMAX 2011 and 2012 but not with early versions.

How to make it work: is to execute server.exe and manager.exe every time we want to use our render farm, as an alternative you can put a shortcut for each one in your startup folder. That’s not the ideal scenario, If you’re at office and you use your mate’s PC as a server… well, he might have been close the server window because it bothers him.

The solution: Install as a service, It’ll start even if no one has logged in or if you don’t have his password to do it yourself.

1) execute “C:\Program Files (x86)\Autodesk\Backburner serversvc -i” as instructed by the help file. Sometimes it fails to install, just allow serversvc.exe to run as administrator for all users and repeat the procedure.

2) edit “C:\Windows\SysWOW64\config\systemprofile\AppData\Local\backburner\backburner.xml” and REPLACE localhost in the 25th line WITH the name of the computer running manager.exe. IP numbers should work as well.

3) Restart the service or the computer if you don’t know how to do it. That’s it. The server now points where the manager is running.

4) Repeat on every computer running the server.
