I’m looking for opinions on a new machine that I’m getting. Before I get it I want to know if there is anything that I should change. I’ll be creating architectural models and renderings similar to this. http://www.landmarkplans.com/fullsize/1800_illus.jpg . I do not plan on doing any animation. Here are the specs.....

Asus P6TSE ( Do I need Deluxe ? )
Intel I7 920 2.66GHZ
12GB DDR3 1600 TR3X6G1600 ( Do I need 12GB or will 6GB be enough ? )
HDD Solidstate 2.5” 128GB SPTLNT ( Operating system & app’s on the solidstate drive )
HDD 1TB SATA SEGATE
GTX260
Vista Ultimate 64bit ( Should I go with Windows XP PRO SP3 ? )

All of the above with a case and power supply will run me about $2,500. If I’m overkilling it on anything please let me know as I’d like to save a few bucks if possible.

Any and all thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for taking the time to read my post and leaving your thoughts.

Josh

hi,

i think you don´t need ultimate, business works fine too. i have an core i7 in my workstation and i am really fine with that. i started with 6 gig ram and wanted to get 12, if needed. but at the moment i still work with 6 gig. so start with 6 you can add some more if you really need this. i think for rendering buildings like your example you will not need more. maybe i would try and get a gtx 285 instead of the 260.
for your ssd i have no experience. i think if you have 6 or 12 gig ram you will not need to swap all the time and you can save some money…

just my thoughts… good luck

I’m going to purchase 3ds Max and I was going to build a new computer just for it, but some things have suddenly come up and it’s going to have to wait. Will you help me out and let me know if my current computer can run 3ds Max at a functional rate.

Here is what my current computer has. I’m looking to see what I need to upgrade or if it will work.

Asus P5N32-E
Intel Core Duo E6850 @ 3.00 GHZ
3GB Ram
Vista Ultimate SP1 32-bit
GeForce 8800GT
ACPI x86Based PC

Thanks for taking the time to look this over. Your time is very appreciated.

hi, i am sure, that you can run 3ds max on your machine. try and start with your machine. if you need and your projects become bigger and you have to render more and bigger scenes, get the new workstation. i think for modeling you will not notice that you have “only” two cores. only rendering will take longer. to improve this, you can get a very cheap quadcore like the q66oo or some phenom x4 and use distributed rendering....

Hi!

I’m also thinking of purchasing anew PC.
I’m currently using Max 2010.

I’m using a custom desktop system from http://www.digitalstormonline.com/:

WinXP Home SP2
Processor: AMD Athlon X2 4800+ Dual-Core (2 MB Cache) w/HyperTransport
Technology
Motherboard: DFI Lan Party DR (Chipset: nForce4 SLI) (Dual 1GB Lan / 10 USB / 2
Firewire)
Memory: 2GB Super Talent at 400MHz (2x 1GB Dual Channel)
Video Card: nVIDIA GeForce 7900GTX 512MB (By: eVGA) (PCI-Express)
Cooling: Air Cooling (Blizzard Extreme Heat-sink) and Fan (Stage 2 Cooling)

Its a nice system. but I do notice the hourglass popping up every few minuste when using Max 2010.
The hourglass appears....and I have to wait 20 seconds before I can continue.
It also takes a few seconds to save a file, compared to saving same file on my work/office laptop.
(Saving same file on laptop is instantaneous.....and laptop has less memory and pc power than the desktop......so go figure.)

Anyway.....I’ve got at least $1,000.00 (USD) to spend.
I haven’t decided on whether I want another desktop or a laptop.

I’m hearing good things regarding the Core i7 920 processor.

Best Buy has some interesting deals (enter Core i7 920 in the search engine).

http://www.bestbuy.com/

Can anyone recommend a good system to buy?

THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks!
