I am puting together a new system for 3ds 2010 Design, Adobe CS4 Master, CorelDRAW X4 etc, Painter X.... this kind of stuff. So would like 3ds and Photoshop CS4 (3D painting etc) to work nicely along also with vector deign design and paitn software).
I currently have a older 9800GT I think which is “ok” with a older Core Dual 1.6 or something...not great… but sufficent. lags big time using Photoshop CS4 3d stuff even with opengl enabled.
I generally stay away from ATI/AMD, so sticking with Nvidia as I usally don’t have problems with them even though I hear there are some new ATI cards that do a lot for the money.
I am looking at this Quadro card and also is my budget for now, as the pricing jumps considerbly for the Quadros (obviously):

I am also looking at the typical Geforce GTX 260....which obviuously is a gamer card....but seems very popular…
I have found some ratings for video cards/cpus:
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/video_lookup.php?cpu=Quadro+FX+580
The low end Quadro rates at a mere 466; My current GT 9800 at 939; and the GTX 260 a whopping 1709! I am guessing these ratings are based on games and not 3DS, whereas maybe the Quadro would then show better numbers in comparison??? Even if so… the Quadro may still be lower than my current GT9800?
I’d hate to buy this Quadro and the GTX 260 blows this away to find out later, even though it’s a gamer card! I had a older Quadro before and it seemed fine on the older system...and I guess it took advantage of the older video drivers for 3ds. But I heard that they JUST released a 3ds specific driver for the quadros? And it doesn’t work entirely great??? not sur...but what I read a little about. I have read that the quadros dol better when lots of objects in a scene… so a geforce would fail in this area? even a gtx260???
I can’t find any comparisons of these cards using 3ds. Seems all are based on gaming setups....
So for around $200, which of these (2) cards would really be best for using 3ds (directx 9 /10; I generally don’t use OpenGL since DirectX works fine and seems a better standard. Since 3DS uses DirectX, wouldn’t the geforce 260 work better then? Or is that only used when using a viewport with shading on??? opposed to wireframe only? Does the Quadro really do much better using the wireframe/shaded viewports than the geforce?
I kind of get the feeling the Quadro cards really only do better than a geforce card when specifically using OPENGL? and they both perform possibly the same when using DirectX????? (are FireGL like this also? they shine more when using OpenGL opposed to DirectX?) Should I use OpenGL or DirectX???
If that is the case, then a Geforce would be fine then? (and could also play games also?) I am not a gamer, but nice to play every so often. After looking for a motherboard, seems most are setup for gamers, multiple video card slots, but I guess only games take advantage? SO not sure if I could eventually put multiple quadros in a SLI motherboard?
Thanks for any help! Much appreciated!
