Hi Guys,

I’m really frustrated, I want to move from blender, to a retail 3D design solution, but the 30 trial of MAX I downloaded does not work.

I get this error:

The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log for more detail.

I’ve searched these forums, as well as many many others, but still have not had a solution.

I have tried:

* Removing ALL visual C++ related items
* Removing ALL .net related items
* Removing ALL framework stuff.
* Installing the visual C++ packages supplied with the download
* Installing updates from Microsoft
* Installing updates from windows update
* XP compatibility mode
* running as an admin
* re-installing
* re-installing ensuring it does install the 32bit version
* copying vc90.dll to the 3DSMax folder

the error in the event log is:

Activation context generation failed for “C:\Program Files\Autodesk\3ds Max 2010\3dsmax.exe”. Dependent Assembly Microsoft.VC90.OpenMP,processorArchitecture="x86”,publicKeyToken="1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b”,type="win32”,version="9.0.21022.8" could not be found. Please use sxstrace.exe for detailed diagnosis.

Any ideas? or is it best to stick to free software like Blender 3D?

I’m on windows 7 32bit

Moving this to the Installation-Hardware-OS forum - more appropriate there and you’re likely to get better responses than here (Max 2010).

Hi Guardian2010,

I’m having exactly the same problem with my trial version of 3ds Max.  Same error message you’re receiving, and I’ve tried all the possible fixes you have. I’ve never experienced a software package that is as obstinate in producing an error after you’ve done everything you could do to completely uninstall and reinstall it.  Btw, 3ds Max was working fine on my machine until I uninstalled the trial version of Maya, which I was evaluating alongside Max.  I decided I want to go with Max, and thought there’d be no harm in uninstalling the Maya trial.  The Maya uninstall apparently screwed something up that was likely being shared with Max, and a reinstall of the original Max trial download won’t fix it.  Please let me know if you’re successful in finding a solution. It’s unfortunate, because I’m prepared to purchase the software, but I’m reluctant to do so given the risk that a fresh install on my machine doesn’t solve this unusual problem.
