Yet another inquiry about the latest and greatest WS build with the current (as of 2009.12.22) hardware/software available. Last year around this time I built my own workstation and researched extensively about what combo of hardware and software would work best. In a nutshell I built an i7 system with an ATI 4890 1GB gpu, and 12 gb of RAM. I opted for WinXP64. As from what I understand it utilizes all the GPU capabilities as opposed to Vista that only uses a fraction of it. Now that Windows 7 is out, even better hardware is available, and new releases of Autodesk programs (I mainly use autocad for drafting, and 3d Max/VRay for rendering and of course the Adobes) what’s a boy to do?

In short...Does the latest release of Windows 7 64 bit version use all of the power of the latest graphics card like WinXP64?

I sold my workstation from last year and am looking to build another one for around 2K.

Thoughts??!!

In short: Windows 7 x64 is THE key for all performance issues!
I never had a better OS until windows 7. Even WinXP x64 is not fast and powerfull enough.
Win7 x64 also handles the memory in much better way then WinXP ever did.
(e.g. I did run the beta version of Win7 x64 and worked on some heavy 3d projects where winXP x64 just crashed. )

graphics problems in viewports are on about the same or slightly better scale than in vista. for uninterrupted viewport navigation of very heavy poly scenes, xp is still the only way to go for max.

that said, i am using win7. i just dont have that many heavy poly scenes.
