Can Distributed Bucket Rendering with mental ray work on machines which have Max installed for network rendering?

Yes, the DBR slaves don’t have to be licensed, only the main workstation does.
DBR with mr will let you use 8 additional processors, that’s processors, not cores, so a quad or dual core counts as just one but still gives you extra buckets.
