Wow!  This bug was fixed in 2010?  I did not know that.  I just assumed that we still had to go through the same laborious process of animating materials.  Honestly this was one of those things I thought Autodesk & Mental Images would never get around to.

It is fixed, but not completely. IIRC you must apply a material to the object first (which you most likely will do) for it to work. See this thread on the subject.
