I have attached a file.  What is causing these?  and what can I do to get rid of it.

Mental Ray with Final Gather.

Hi!
i’ve got the same issue several times, and got 2 working solutions for me, depending on the case:
1. MR does not like the Multi Sub/object material that has unused slots in it, so i purged it and i got rid of the spots/artefacts
2. on one object in my scene, with different ID’s for different faces and with Multi S/O material assigned to it, i forgot to select all faces before unselecting the object (which of course had several UVW maps).

maybe it could work for you,

good luck

Thanks for the tip.  I am working on it.  It seems those problems are some of it.  I am fiddling with it more.  Adjusting materials a bit and seeing what happens.

Thanks and I will let you know how it turns out.  And if there are other solutions out there, I am glad to hear them, because my problems aren’t completely going away with those 2 adjustments.

Well, I tried making the multi-sub object into 4 different objects and I am still getting this.  Any other ideas?

Hi,

These training modules are fantastic for learning about mr
http://www.mentalboutmax.com/

I’m only about half way through the Overview series but already feel somewhat more at ease about using mental ray. They really do a good job of presenting the material.

Anyway ... point of reply ... I think that within the OS M2 “Making the Switch” module they mention that boosting the Noise Filtering (speckle Reduction) setting - in the Render Scene>Indirect Illumination>Advanced section - to a higher level than “standard” may help with the artifacts. I do believe they attribute them to materials but I could be mistaken. Maybe Brian will pop in and lend a hand.

Worth a shot maybe?

How can I resist an invite like that! :-)

The problem with artifacting such as your showing is that there are
probably a dozen potential reasons inc Materials/settings, FG and
even memory issues. Some clear info on materials used, light setup
and FG/GI settings would help. The ‘splotching’ in the module Daf
mentions is caused by Materials and FG but these are a little different.

Bri

PS Thanks for the kind words Daf. :-)

Thanks to both of you.  I was able to figure it out - it was more multisub and then something sort of embarrassing… I was using a saved FG file!  Duh!  The image is below.

Unfortunately, at 720x480, it takes 25-30 min to render and I need 800+ animated frame of it.  Thats impossible.

I have tried the GRID method but it slowed it down even more - especially the FG.  I am currently using BSP Large with Size = 2 and Depth =100.  It has sped it up a bit, but not enough to render 800+ frames.  The FG itself renders quickly, its the reflections that are killing the render time.

As you can see below, it has a lot of glossy plastic and chrome metal.  I have removed the Arch&Design material from the distant objects, but its the close objects - espcially the right side that is slowing things down.

Any suggestions as to speeding this render up?  material changes while keeping the look?  Help is appreciated.

Tim,

Did you try the “Render Every Nth Frame” by saving a Final Gather map?
Also the Highlight + FG only for the less reflective or flat objects, what about the AO samples, did you try to cut the maximal distance for the reflections in the “Advanced rendering options”, what is the “Sampling Quality” and the used filter method…

Finally can you post a zipped sample file here, somebody will take a look and find a kind of solution, if there is any.

I am down to a rendering time of 26 minutes.  Lots of limits on the reflection distance and refraction.  Lots of fast interpolate at 1/4.

I can’t post the file here, its too large even zipped.  I can email it to anyone who wants to take a look though.  I’d appreciate it.

Hey Tim,

Shoot it our way, can’t promise anything but will take a look.

Mentalboutmax will surely find the culprit, but I’m also curious:
