Any suggestions to make these shadows appear darker??
using:
mrSun and Logarithmic exposure
Brightness-55
Contrast-80
Gray material has matte finish, no texture, no reflectivity

Assuming you are using the Haze Driven Sky Model; what about the Haze value, is it something different than “0”, also the “Mid tones” value in the exposure control, you can decrease it a bit.
Before all, which version of Max are you using, tell more about the Sky settings, what about the multiplier value for example, you can decrease it a bit also.

I’m using 3ds Max Design 2009
midtones 1.0
haze value 4
sky multipler 1
After adjusting some of the setting, the shadows are a little darker, but so is my scene.
midtones .1
haze value 1
sky multipler .5
Is there anything else that I should attempt to make the shadows darker?

Any reason you’re using Logarithmic and not mrPhotographic Exposure Control? Not sure how much of a difference it will make, but most agree that mental ray works better with mrPEC.

True, mrPEC is better.
Are you using Gamma Correction? It’s a must with mr daylight and exposure control, or you will get a low contrast render.
One main thing that can affect the shadows is the ratio between the brightness of the sun and the sky, Haze can alter this, or you can alter it manually with the multipliers.
Other things that can brighten shadows are FG bounces and GI if you have it on.
