how would I go about creating a photobooth type environment, where the background is entirely white but still shows shadows, that also applies vertical surfaces? Right now I have a set-up that achieves this look on the ground, but the transition from ground to wall is terrible. The walls are much darker (but not black, more like a medium grey) even with self illumination set to 100. I need the walls to also be white as well, with no visible transition between them and the floor. How would I go about creating this?

Assuming I properly understand the issue, the already discussed method must be able to achieve that as well. Did you check the “Unexplained question” post below?

I found it, thanks!

EDIT: ok so I ran through the tutorials and tips, and after a lot of trial and error and frustration I think I finally have this figured out. I can render a scene in which the floor object is not visible, but shadows and reflections are. With a white environment background its perfect. thanks!
