Hello everyone i just heard about a pass called “position pass” very useful for compositing porpuse, it creates a semi 3d perspective of the image on the compositing software, so u can have a better understand in the 3d view with your comp software, but I
dont know if it can be created in 3ds max.

Does anyone know about it?
Thanks

just for your information: there’s none comp package out there, as far as i know, which can use the “position pass” right out of the shelf. i’ve seen a nuke example, lately ;-) , and there it was a custom programmed node.

as for, if there’s something in 3dsmax, i don’t know. maybe there’s a mr shader?

EDIT: I’ve just learned from master zap:
Step #1: Add a “mental ray” material (remember those things?) :)
Step #2: In the “Surface” slot add the XYZ Generator shader
Step #3: Set it’s CoordinateSystem to 3
Step #4: Render to float ("Render" dialog, “Renderer” tab, “Framebuffer Type: Floating Point")
Step #5: Output to EXR, making sure no gamma curve is applied to your output.

hail the master! :o)

best,
rayk

Is it similar to a z-depth pass?  The depth map generated from the camera’s z-depth is used quite often for compositioning.

its very diferent, not only for positioning the images, it creates position in x, w, and z so the program can reconstruc a semi 3d view in the 3d viwport of the compo software, z depth is in grayscale and this position pass uses colors, i have seen images with light blue and yellow.
