I’ve got a plane with a bitmap loaded in the diffuse, in this case a tree. There is also a black and white version of the image in the opacity map of the material. However when I render grass, it stops at the edge of the plane, ignoring the transparency. Any ideas? Thanks.

Made a quick example of what I’m talking about, see image.

Change from buffer render mode to geometry in the Effects dialog. Or switch to mental ray. Or composite the tree after.

It doesn’t seem scanline acknowledges opacity of occlusion objects for the buffer render type.

Change the Composite Method to GBuffer.

Does that work in 2012? I tested it with 2009 & 2010 and it doesn’t work in scanline.

I can’t say i have tested this recently. But that is the purpose of the GBuffer composite method, to render hair behind transparent surfaces. It does not work for refractive transparency, that needs as you say geometry hair, but it should be OK for opacity maps like this.
