no matter what I set my rendering options to, it seems that 3ds max will not let me render a high-quality image. I tried rendering the attached image at 1920x1080 pixels, but it seems like it came out at 640x480. I’m not sure how to fix this, I already tried messing with the JPEG quality settings.
any suggestions?

Assuming that is MR rendering, what are the sample quality and filter settings?

It looks very soft. I remember in Max 2009 Jpegs defaulted to saving with smoothing set to the max. If that’s the case, turn it right down. Or use a lossless format like PNG.

The image output dimenisions are set in the Rending Dialog.
I’ve never, and I mean never, had an image render at 640x480 when it is set at a different image size.
The only time that could happen is setting the Rendering Dialog to one size, then rendering through Video Post which has its own image size setting.

The image posted is 1280 x 800, so it’s bigger than 640 x 480. I think he means the image quality. If you view it at actual size it is very soft looking, like it has a blur filter applied, or has been upscaled from a lower resolution.

It is just a joke; I’m trying to achieve something similar using Max 9 and Logarithmic Exposure and sampling filter twice the default value.
This post is a typical example of poor question.
If the post describing the issue doesn’t content the basic info, cannot be properly answered.

thanks guys - setting the smoothing to 0 fixed it. now I can move on to the other parts of this project
EDIT: Here’s what I produced after fixing the problem (and adjusting the lighting a bit) It’s still a work in progress, but I still think as an untextured semi-city it looks pretty cool.
