Hello.

I am having a problem in exporting channels in RLA/RPF file formats from max. Max saves the RLA/RPF file but doesn’t save the channels in it. I want to save Z Depth, Material ID, Object ID, Coverage, etc. and for that I selected these channels from the channels list in the RPF Image File Format dialog box.

I am attaching a simple max file (max 201064bit) so that you can see what’s the actual problem in it. I would be very much glad to know the reason.

Regards.

In what application are you trying to access the channels?

Thank you.
Sorry for replying late. I was a bit busy last few days.
Well I am using After Effects CS2. But that’s not important I guess because max itself doesn’t show any channel in the saved rpf file when I select it and hit the info button present in the Save Images dialog box.

You should be able to select the channel to view in the RFW or View Image File window, from the drop-down list that says RGB Alpha by default. Also, right-click dragging over the image should show pixel stats, does this work? Can you access the channels in AE?

Exactly, you got it!
After rendering an image, if I right click and see the channels, none of them are displayed. It shows N/A in all the channels in the ‘Extra Pixel Data’ group. So what should I do now?

I just opened the file you posted, and noticed that it is not set up to save a file.  If you don’t set a file to save as RPF in the Render Dialog, it will not render out the additional channels.  If you are just trying to save your RPF from the rendered frame window, the additional channels will NOT save.

Thanks a lot!
You are right. I was doing the same mistake by saving the image from the Render window directly. Now I did as you suggested & my problem is solved.
Thanks once again.
Regards.

After saving that file if I reset Max & make a new file then also the channels are displayed, even if I don’t give an Output path in the Render Dialog. But this setting remains till Max is open. As soon as I quit the application & restart it & make a new file, the channels are not displayed & after giving an Output path the channels are displayed again.
Anyways my problem was solved so I think I should not worry about this thing.
