Okay, so I had a scene in 3ds max 2009 that was just a simple divided cube (3 rows/columns of polygons in each axis). I can’t remember how I got my rendered image of the water I made from this cube. I know of the Arch & Design materials, where there is a list of different types of those materials, and I might have chosen one of the water Arch & Design materials. I also know there is a material called something like ProMaterials: Water, and I might have used that instead, but I don’t know now, because I saved over it after I saved the rendered image of the original water material I made, and I added a spot light, and used certain rendering settings that I forgot now.

The reason I am upset about this water material I made now, is because of the fact that once I saved over the material I had before, I cannot get that back.

Can someone give me a good way to make good looking water, using specific rendering details about the settings used, and all details about the materials to make good looking water, please?

Thanks a ton!

There is an A&D Template for Water, as well as the ProMat Water types. Because the water materials are reflective, their look is also depenant on the Environment they are in.

The scale of the scene, or rather, how closely you’ll be seeing the water will affect how good it looks as well.  The Promaterials Water looks nice at a distance but I haven’t had luck with it when viewed up close.  I’ll typically start with the A&D water preset, and tweak it from there depending on how its being used.
