Hello. I started learning how to use 3ds max a few days ago, and right now I’m trying to understand how to use the Materials option and how to animate.
So I started working on the Solar System. Everything went fine (I had a few problems with Earth though) until Saturn. I have no idea how to texture its ring.
I created a Donut (from Shapes/Splines) and converted it to an Editable Poly.
This is what it looks like.
I got the textures from here, but I can’t figure out how to set that ring texture to a donut shape. Any ideas?
Off-topic: Also, does anybody know what is the easiest way to animate the Solar System (planets orbit around sun, moons around planets, etc.)?
Edit: Just realized; I hope this isn’t in the wrong section, is it? If it is, please accept my apology.

Well, you’ll need appropriate uvs on your object. Not sure what the default uvs are for a donut, but instead of a donut, I’d try making a tube, then convert to editable poly and delete everything except for the flat faces on top. That should have better uvs setup, then it’ll be as simple as applying that map to the opacity of a material, and maybe rotating the map 90 degrees inside the material editor if it’s traveling in the wrong direction. Good luck!
