I’m currently working on a model of a near future jet, rendering it in mental ray, and I’m having trouble creating a material that can simulate the exhaust of jet engine. Here is the look i am going for

HarrierNearGround.jpg

My current idea is to create a mesh of where the exhaust will be, use noise modifiers and such to give it that turbulent appearance, but it’s in the creating of the material that i’m stuck. My trouble is creating a matte material that has that blur effect to it and that slight tint of brown from the smoke.

I have a feeling that it’s something blindingly simple that I’m not coming up with, but any suggestions or jumping off points would be greatly appreciated.

I didn’t even consider using particles for this, I’m going to have to give it a try
